Hardware Restoration

I really like to use the hardware that comes with a piece that I'm refinishing.  I know sometimes it's not possible because a knob is missing or you just plain don't like them.

If I don't like the hardware, my first thought is what can I do to it so that I DO like it?

A friend of mine has been raving about a product called Rub N Buff.  I am working on a dresser where I really loved the detailing in the hardware but it was ugly and dirty.  I thought this would be a perfect chance to try out a product I never tried before.

Rub N Buff is a wax that has fine metallic powders blended in.  The website states that Rub n Buff is good for the following projects.

  • restoring cherished antiques
  • stenciling
  • frame finishing
  • antiquing
  • home decor
  • restoration
  • crafts projects
The directions say to rub on the product with your finger or a soft cloth and then buff.  I followed the directions and love how the hardware turned out for my dresser.

Rub n Buff is very simple to use.  You do literally just "rub and then buff".  I chose to use Antique Gold but there is something for every style.  I bought mine at Michael's (40% off coupon saves like 40 cents but you know. . . ). Michael's had the very basics-gold, silver, and white. You can find Rub n Buff online and there are many more choices of metals and colors.

I would recommend using Rub N Buff on anything small that you might consider spray painting.  It will save some time and cleanup.  This product also goes a long way so be prepared to have your tube around for a while.

On other news, I picked up a white four poster bed from Craigslist for my daughters room.  I just love a good Craigslist find.  This bed was so inexpensive and superior quality and over 60 years old.  We just love how it finishes off her room.  I promised her I would make some sort of canopy for it.  Pictures will follow soon after I get a bed skirt and make a canopy.

I have also been a Pinning fool this week creating a new board titled "Matthew's room".  He is 10 and has been begging for about a year now to be moved to the guest room.  He and Luke do not have the same values when it comes to cleanliness so I can understand his frustration.  I have always been OK with the idea but this week Big Daddy finally caved.  We will be designing a new boys room!  More on that to come also.

  4. Looks fantastic! I am getting very tempted to try Rub N Buffing my headboard...seems like a much too big project, but I bet I would only use two or three tubes. So much easier than taking the whole thing apart and dragging it out to spray paint it. Love the blog, looking fantastic!
