Ombre Salvation Army Bureau {Before & After}

50% off furniture at our local Salvation Army store.  Score!

I loved the simple lines and legs on this piece.  I was looking for something low and long as opposed to high.  This is a picture of the bureau that was being replaced.

I knew I wanted to do something super cute for Olivia's room on this new bureau.  I also was going with something a little more neutral since the walls are so "in your face".  Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White seemed like the perfect candidate.  It wasn't until I had the dresser under way that it occurred to me to do the ombre effect on it.  I am so glad that came to me because I am absolutely in love with this bureau.  Every time I walk in the room I think " I can't believe I painted that".

As you probably already know, no need to sand or prime if you are using the ASCP.  The stuff is that good!  2 coats of Old White over the whole bureau.
I had a little friend who decided he was going to do a paint project along side of me.  That was ok.  The company was nice.  We talked about school, kids, space, painting, you name it.  Good bonding moment.
Here's the two coats going on by yours truly.  Wow, I should really do my hair if I'm going to have pictures of myself on the blog.  Instead I have a little girl hair band in my hair.  Oh well!

To do the Ombre, I put some Old White in an old container.  I added some acrylic paint to the Old White until I had a light tone of what was on the walls in Olivia's room.

With the light color I painted the top two drawers.  For the middle two drawers I used the leftover paint from the top drawers and added more acrylic to it until I got the color that I thought was dark enough to notice a difference but not too dark that it seemed like a big jump in gradation.  I did the same steps again after the second two drawers done.
I used the Minwax Finishing Paste.  I haven't yet invested in the Annie Sloan wax.  Maybe at some point I will but I'm happy with the finish I get with the Minwax.  It is a smooth, silky feel with no shine.
I also painted the original hardware.  Well, mostly because I had it on hand.  I like it but I envision beautiful crystal pulls.  Maybe some day but probably not.

Here she is in her new home.
